Why most developers are broke

I’ll tell ya this… it has nothing to do with talent.

I recently had another fupastar send me one of their hysterical emails complaining about… “John, why for you talk about da munies”. I get these from time to time… any time I talk about the business side of web development.

Well… heaven forbid!

God forbid I talk about the thing all of us are not-so-secretly after — and help people to build a lucrative career around their web development skills. What a monster! Of course, this is the very thing that holds most developers back.

Hell, most people.

Because if you can’t even read an email about it from me without going hysterical… how the hell are you going to sit down with a client or company and negotiate a fair price for your services?

Or ask for a raise?

Or raise your freelance prices?

Oh, you think people will just pay you fairly?

They’ll notice your hard work and reward you without YOU having to ask?


That’s cute.

It’s also why lots and lots of really talented developers are flat broke. They run screeching from anything that smells of “sales” or “muney”. And, even if you’re not that dramatic with it…

Do you embrace it?

Do you dig deep into marketing and selling yourself?

Do you devour every ounce of information you can get?

Probably not.

But, the most successful developers I know… do. But, whatever you believe, know this… nobody is going to hand you what you deserve. That much, I can guarantee you. If you want it, you have to take it.

That’s reality.

Like it or not.
