I’ve Been Coding Forever and Still Suck. What Do I Do?

I got this YouTube comment from Christoffer:

“I code every day, about 5 hours a day for over a year and my coding capacity is really small.”

I’ve thought about this comment a lot.

I know the feeling and I really want to give Christoffer some hope. But, that’s the tricky thing about reality. It tends to butt its way in, even when you don’t want it to. And, here’s the reality of this.

It doesn’t matter.

I mean, did anyone say this was going to be easy?

Not me.

I took me almost five years to learn PHP. I know better than to tell people this coding thing is easy. It’s probably the hardest thing you’ll ever do in your life. It’ll frustrate and challenge you in ways nothing else can.

But, if you want it…

It doesn’t matter.

If it takes a year. 5 years. 10 years. It doesn’t matter. If this is truly what you want to do with your life, then you do it anyway. But, if it’s not… then, no amount of time can save you.

You could spend 100 years and never really “get” it.

Today, for me, PHP is nothing.

Even though, it took me as long as it did to learn. Once I did learn it, that was it. Now, I “got” it and I’ll never “lose” it. That’s just the way it works. And, that’s what you have to look forward to.

Grind and struggle and pull every hair in your head out…

Then, one day, it’s suddenly dead simple…

And, it’s like, “WTF just happened?”

Moral of the story:

If you really want it, keep grinding.

And, that’s it.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

Bob Patterson

Not only is John a very talented programmer and developer, he is also an excellent communicator. He has a talent for taking complex subjects and communicating them in terms that anyone can understand. This is a rare combination. This ability has enabled me to take my skills and knowledge to the next level. Thank you John for for all that you do.

Ray Edwards

I recommend John every chance I get. If every person I worked with were as committed to excellence, punctuality, value, and unquestionable integrity… the world would be a better place. Highest recommendation.

Lewis Howes

John is amazing at building membership sites. He converted one of my sites over from it’s existing (hardly working) platform over to the clean and simple to use WishList membership platform. I highly recommend using John and WishList for any of your membership site needs.

Lori Grant

John did an outstanding job on my project. I highly recommend him and look forward to working with him on future projects.

Bradley Smith

John and I have worked together on numerous projects. John is very quick and efficient and was a pleasure to work with.

Sukh Plaha

John is a fantastic and patient tutor, who is not just able to share knowledge and communicate it very effectively – but able to support one in applying it. However, I believe that John has a very rare ability to go further than just imparting knowledge and showing one how to apply it. He is able to innately provoke one’s curiosity when explaining and demonstrating concepts, to the extent that one can explore and unravel their own learning journey. Thanks very much John!

Chris Aitken

He significantly improved my site through his expert knowledge of PHP, CSS and Javascript. Would definitely recommend John to others.
