…wasn’t a coder.
He was my college English teacher. Dude had a knack for blowing your mind every day of class. It was one of the few classes I looked forward to getting up for. But, the thing he taught me that’s so crucial for coding is:
“Mental flexibility”.
The ability to look at anything from 10 different angles.
That was his trick.
See, everday we had a reading assignment. And, we had to come to class prepared to give our point of view on what we read. And, our grade was based on how well we participated. That was all our grade, in fact. No tests. No quizzes. Just talking.
And, I’d always go in thinking I had the “answer”.
That THIS is what this story was about.
Then, this guy would go about outlining 10 different meanings that all made complete sense. And, I’d always leave thinking I was an idiot. He was the first person who really challenged me to think outside my narrow-focused view of things. If not, who knows… I may have wound up some narrow-minded, cynical know-it-all who exploded into fits of rage and frothing at the mouth when I heard a different point of view… ya know… a leftist.
Anyway, it reminds of my first coding mentor.
Every time, I had a problem…
He could usually unravel it in just a few minutes.
And, I’d always leave thinking:
“Why didn’t I think of that?”
And, it was because of his “mental flexibility”. He could look at things from a bunch of different angles… things I never even thought of… and could quickly figure out a solution.
And, it helped me develop that “mental flexibility”.
And, learn how to code way faster.
That’s the power of a good teacher.
Anyway, I thought of all this because this coming week is Teacher Appreciation Week. And, Udemy is running another 10-buq deal. You can get most of their 30,000+ courses for just 10 buqs. And, get access to a teacher that can help you learn how to code way faster than you would otherwise.
This one ends May 6th.
Do what you want…
But, this is one great way to get the life you’re after… faster.
